“We want a house with a twist, a house that has something something to say.”

A house with a twist

When a young french family approached the Powerhouse Company to design a house-extension with a twist they had no idea that could result in a truly twisting house.

As opposed to the existing house, an old Burgundy farm, the new wing is dedicated to host their guest and visitors. With a large living room and a series of guest rooms the extension is not only an invitation into their home but also a picturesque experience of the surrounding landscape offered to their visitors. Set in the middle of a generous property of 13.000m2, crossed by a small river and planted of a wide variety of old ornamental trees, the Spiral House enjoys the sweet and pastoral charm of the landscape of Burgundy.

© Stephane Chalmeau

A loop into the landscape

Despite its traditional architecture the existing house was struggling to inhabit and occupy the share size of the park. By contrast the Spiral House expands freely in the garden seeking to create as many experiences of the garden as possible. In a gentle swing from the ground floor to the roof level it creates a surprising variety of spaces that blurs the boundaries between the house and the garden where the architecture and the landscape merge together.

ground floor plan

Wrapping the house around a planted patio the Spiral House reminds the “Clos”: the walls enclosing the famous vineyards of the region. In the Spiral House this “Clos” is transformed into an inviting gesture, the peripheral wall is transformed to create a spiral: a continuous invitation from outside to inside, a continuous movement from the entrance to the more intimate rooms of the house. The patio, the covered terrace and the panoramic views connect the house with the garden and invite the guests to unwind and enjoy the garden’s life.

More than a house, the Spiral House is a pleasurable and sheltered promenade in the landscape to its guests.

© Stephane Chalmeau

Open and intimate

With its abstract and sculptural volume the Spiral House escapes any pre-set style and dialogues spontaneously with the old house and the garden. Its geometry grew from the internal organisation of the house and the particular wishes of the client such as large and open rooms with high ceilings on the ground floor for the living room and the library, and smaller and intimate spaces for two guest suites. It also includes a multi-purpose dorm/playroom for the the kids and their friends.

Together with the existing house, the Spiral House describes a programmatic loop and additionally creates a patio in the centre of the house. All the rooms are distributed around this patio along gentle stairs that rises gradually from ground floor to first floor. Visitors enter the extension by the patio and are thus welcomed in the heart of the house.

© Stephane Chalmeau

The architecture of the Spiral House is focused on the distribution of openness and the intimacy of space. The fully glazed patio floods the house with sunlight and create a great openness without compromising its intimacy. The external façades are perforated with windows varying in size and proportions and framing selected views on the garden to create a particular atmosphere in each room. It is a continuous space of soft transitions from public to private. The rooms functions as a successions of mezzanines that can be closed or opened, providing the guest with a subtle feeling of participating in the life of the house.

Elegant and adaptable

Powerhouse Company’s design approach allowed the Spiral House to be build with a conventional budget for a mid range single family house. Priority is given to quality of the spaces, of light exposures and view rather than the expenses in materials. That means that a large part of the budget was invested in the structure to realize the complex geometry and achieve a surprising diversity of spaces with only 200m2 of floor area.

© Stephane Chalmeau

The clients specifically wished for a design that would permit them to supervise the entire construction of the house themselves. The Spiral House is built with a wooden structure, a system that creates a high degree of flexibility and adaptability. This made it relatively easy to adapt the complex geometry on site and further reduce the budget risks during the building phase.

In terms of materialization, the sculptural dimension of the volume is balanced with minimalist materials and details for the façade, giving it an elegant touch. The hidden window frames reduce the number of visible details on the façade. Additionally, the smooth plaster on the exterior walls contains subtle golden glitter-shine that playfully captures the light.

In a Zurich municipality, better known for its industrial and shopping facilities, nimmrichter cda compiled a study dealing with the long term development of a plot of land with an existing building on site. A comprehensive survey of various factors revealed the plot’s development potential for the next generation. Competing against a modular house manufacturer, the unconventional design submitted by Rolf Nimmrichter’s architecture office was awarded the commission.

plan 01

The parameters of the design were determined by the desire for autonomy of form and materiality, as well as the new building’s interaction with the house and pool already on the land. An existing pavilion, acting as pool and summer house, was demolished and replaced by a new volume.

The new building’s form is a response to its position on the site, and the angled façade reflects the client’s desire for living areas offering different degrees of openness or seclusion. The exterior is faced with horizontal, open-jointed cedar batten cladding, which further emphasises the geometry of the building.

© Bruno Helbling

The three-floor building’s overall volume is 1, 000 m³. Garage and necessary storage and utility rooms are located in the basement. The open-plan ground floor comprises one large living, eating and cooking area, and there are three bedrooms and a recessed balcony on the upper floor.

The interior, also designed by nimmrichter cda, is defined by its core faced in chestnut wood, which encompasses the entrance hall, with cloakroom and externally-accessible guest toilet, and the staircase.

© Bruno Helbling

The box delineates the eating-living area and contrasts with the dark, rough concrete floor and the black kitchen elements.

The building is Minergie® certified, a registered quality label for low-energy buildings. The energy concept includes making use of the neighbouring house’s existing heating system and using solar panels to heat water for both houses.

The site is very steep, long and narrow – 50’ wide by 400’ long with an average slope of 35%. Located on the west side of Mercer Island, there are panoramic views west towards Seattle and the Olympic Mountains beyond. Zoning permitted construction on only 35’ of the 50’ property width, and limited the height of the building to 30’ relative to the slope of the site.

site plan

Exterior terraces and courtyards are carved into the sloping hillside to facilitate pedestrian circulation throughout the site; to provide natural light throughout the primary levels of the house; and to provide privacy from the neighboring properties. The house consists of two parts: a concrete plinth which contains utilitarian and less-used spaces; and a hovering wood volume above that contains the private functions of family bedrooms and bathrooms. The resulting space sandwiched between the wood structure and concrete plinth houses the primary living areas, bound by large expanses of glazing that afford views through the open level of the house to the Lake beyond.

© Alan Abramowitz

To access the house, one navigates through the series of excavated exterior terraces and stairways, across water features and bridges, then down another stairway, finally arriving at a small exterior glass-enclosed courtyard in the center of the residence. This entry sequence informed the shape of the wood volume as well as the placement and configuration of the concrete retaining walls. Horizontal wood siding assembled with members of alternating depth enhance the notions of texture, shadow and perspective; contrast with the smooth concrete site walls; and ultimately heighten the journey from driveway to center of house.

The estate consists of five blocks, the design of which is based upon a wish of creating a flexible concept able to contain different accommodation units within the same idea and idiom. The buildings were made so that they can be adapted to each individual resident and to the demand and will consequently be suitable for a wide segment of residents. The flats in the five blocks are situated around a centrally placed staircase (the core of the house); on the ground floor there is a parking area (also for bicycles) for the residents, depots and rooms for garbage cans.

site plan

© Adam Mørk

Around this core it is possible to set up three, four or five flats, which can be arranged horizontally, vertically or as a combination – and the arrangement can be different in the other blocks.

© Thomas Mølvig

The basic idea is to build all five blocks with three to five flats depending on requirements as to size and inner arrangement. Afterwards the intention is to imitate “a stroke with an axe” in order to give the building an aesthetic distinctive character as well as functional advantages. The strokes are placed where they will give the optimum conditions for view and daylight in the depth of the building. Apart from giving view and sunlight the strokes also create a private terrace for each flat. The inside arrangement of the flats consists of regular rooms which are contrasted by the oblique angles made by the strokes of an axe. Due to the combination of the different arrangement of the three storeys of the blocks, the number of flats and the placement of the strokes you will see five blocks with a different exterior, yet architecturally closely related…

Shoal Bay is a remote settlement on the rugged east coast of southern Hawkes Bay. The building is designed to be part of the rural setting, it is raised off the ground and sits beside the original woolshed, which has served the bay since the early 1900’s. The bach is rugged yet welcoming and offers unpretentious shelter, it is the type of place where you kick off your shoes and don’t need to worry whether you walk sand through the house.

The bach is formed of two slightly off-set pavilions, one housing the bedrooms and the other the main living space. Decks are located at each end of the living pavilion allowing the sun to be followed throughout the day. Sliding screens at the north-west end provide adjustable shelter for the different wind conditions, offer privacy from neighbouring campers and act as walls for outside sleeping.

Located on the Eastern coastline of the Huaraki Gulfs, Great Barrier Island the ‘Great Barrier House’ is a relaxed holiday destination that references traditional notions of bach occupation. Drawing inspiration from the idea of two sheds linked by stretched tarpaulin, the house consists of two habitable areas joined by an expansive floating pavilion. Wide expanses of sliding glass doors & adjustable blinds allow the pavilion to respond to different environmental conditions while providing the location for eating dining & relaxing within the natural surrounds of the property.

Clad in band sawn ply sheet the ‘sheds’ provide a modern take on the use of vernacular building materials. Coupled with the use of permeable metal screens the ability to manipulate outlook and environment from within the ‘sheds’, provides further reference to traditional notions of holiday occupation and response to site. As locations for the bedrooms and bathrooms these built forms offer a sense of refuge from the open pavilion space.

A roof deck upon the Northern ‘shed’, gives outlook and sea views, otherwise restricted by the site location behind the Medlands beach sand dunes and nestled amongst the neighboring properties. Standing upon the roof deck looking South-West towards aging corrugated farm sheds and looking North-East towards the expansive seascape, the Great Barrier House sits comfortably within its environment; offering a private retreat while allowing an occupation that embraces the surrounding landscape and context.

Designed to encourage interdisciplinary communication and informal learning, this 80,000-square-foot building contains 15 classrooms, eight labs, faculty offices and a conference hall, extra-help rooms and special project areas. The program also includes a multi-media classroom, two biology gardens and a growth room, two small seminar rooms, six informal seating areas; seven garden terraces, a café, a lecture hall that also functions as a 50-seat planetarium, and a large lecture hall arranged in a Socratic configuration with interactive, distance learning capabilities.

The centerpiece of the building is a multi-purpose central commons with a starfield map and analemma, providing circulation space and a public lobby for the lecture halls.

The program is arranged in an elongated Z-shaped plan, with this central large atrium/common area. By incorporating this plan with the site, existing contour lines on the site were extruded in brick to form the walls of the architecture. By greening the roofs and terraces, the Z-form of the structure dissolves into a fluid form characteristic of the landscape. To complement the predominantly Georgian style of Deerfield Academy, the Koch Center is built out of locally-made bricks from a Massachusetts company established in 1893.

The building aims to make the wonders of science and perception visible in the actual design of the building. The analemma skylight, essentially a pinhole in the roof plane of the building, admits a beam of light on to the north wall of the science commons. The changing position of the sun in the sky (high in summer, low in winter) changes the position of the projection, creating the infinity shape of the analemma and demonstrating the elliptical and axial movement of the earth on its yearly orbit about the sun.

Architectural photography agency VIEW have sent us these photos by Christian Richters of a wooden house in Utrecht, Netherlands, by Amsterdam architects Rocha Tombal.

Called House Bierings, the timber-clad building has different shaped windows protruding from it’s surfaces at various angles on all sides.

A deep porch leads through the entrance hall to a kitchen with a large glass window overlooking the garden.

Each window is positioned to obscure views of neighbouring buildings and frame views of the countryside beyond.

Photos are copyright Christian Richters/VIEW and used with permision.

Here’s some more information about the house from Rocha Tombal’s website:

–

House Bierings
2007-2008

From a basic form, defined by the municipal urban plan, sculptural “eyes” emerge with direct views to the varied countryside landscape.

The form and orientation of the building avoid visual contact with the adjacent houses: at the ground floor the angled ceiling of the kitchen accentuates the intensive contact with the garden.

On the first floor, the different shaped openings in the roof and façade offer, like “fingers of light”, varied daylight experiences.

The routing through the house starts in the hall, a section of the ground floor volume.

After experiencing the entrance area and passing the gigantic pivoted door, the visitor arrives at the “heart of the house”, the kitchen.

Here he looks through the big glass wall straight into the garden, which suggests being outside again.

Behind him, the stair cuts a wooden wall inviting to follow the route towards the first floor.

Its angled form and extreme proportions (small and high) and the daylight entering from the ceiling, offer the feeling of walking in a medieval street.

At the end of it he discovers the living room, a quiet, north-lighted attic space, from which a big opening exposes the surrounding green like in a framed painting.

Lifted up, it creates a semi-public space on ground level between two layers of discretion. The skin of the villa performs a sophisticated connection between inside and outside and offers spectacular views onto the old town of Marbach and the German national literature archive on the other side of the Neckar valley.
